For our social studies class, we have been talking about the Slave Trade Triangle and how the music can affect and help the slaves. We talked about the 3 different stages of the trade triangle, we learned how the process is happening. I also did some research about what the slave's life look like and how are they getting treated. In this 3 stages there are a lot of difference in each other of it. The first one is the ship from England will travel to West Africa with some goods/product in it. The second one is the slaves from West Africa will be going to America, in this part there are a lot of things happening, it shows us how the slaves suffering in many different reasons. The last and the final stage of the trade triangle is the ship with goods in it is going back to England, after all of this the cycle will just start again. If you want to see more information about my work just use the link that I put.
For them music is really important in their everyday life. They use music in many different ways it can be to communicate to each other, festivals or for those people that can't be able to read. But their music is helpful when they are trying to talk to each other and plan how are they gonna take over to the ship. They will change the lyrics to their message to each other, in this way the other people will not be able to understand them. This is called "Spirituals" there are a lot of example of this type of songs but one of the these song is called "Wade in the water" This song means something, the song is telling the slaves to escape and got to the water so the dogs will never and lost their trail. This song is telling the slaves the better way to escape, if you didn't know the slavers has a dogs that can guard the slaves, we all know how dogs can find someone easily so if the slaves went to the water the dogs will not be able to find them. If they are lucky and got a chance to escape the Africans will part away from each other and start a new life to different countries.
Harriet Tubman is one of those slave that get a chance to escape. She become a women conductor of the Underground Railway, she become responsible leading those enslaved people to freedom before the Civil war. Harriet is also a nurse and woman suffrage supporter. Because of her there re a lot of enslaved people and change their life.
They are using this songs in many different events like, wedding, funeral or in church. Spirituals music have a big contribution of African's everyday life. Those slaves that are taken to America find this kind of songs helpful so they can escape to this torture.
Sadly, all of this is still happening this time. It's very unfair for all them to get treated in this way. I didn't know that any of these things are happening and I'm glad that I've learned about it. We should treat each other fairly without doing all of this.I hope they can get the freedom that they deserve. In this time they called it "Human Trafficking" it is all about taking someone with force or violence. They might called it in different way but it is still doing those horrible things to them.
