Term 1 Reflection

First-term is almost done, and today is our last day. In ESOL, we need to do a blog post about the lesson that we have learning and how we feel in our first term this year.

First-term this year in ESOL is new for me this year since this is the first time that we met our new teacher. The lessons are easy, and it's not that complicated as I expected. Some of them are what we already did last year. However, even though we already did some of them the tasks that we have been doing are still helpful for us to improve our grammar and other skills. Our class is not new to me because I am with most of them in ESOL for the past few years. I like this subject and I can't wait to go back in term two and learn more things. I'm enjoying the things that we have been doing so far and, I found some of them helpful.

Live Aid - Social Studies

Today is the last day of our social studies class for this term. For our last topic we are learning about Live Aid and how does this help "Ethiopia".Our work for this term is mostly in our map.For this blog, we will be analyzing song that was performed by an artist in Live Aid. We can choose any song but it need to be the song that are performed in Live aid.

"Against All Odds" By Phil Collins

Why do you think this artist used this song for their performance?
In my opinion, Phil Collins used this song maybe because this time he was popular and same with his songs. A lot of people went to watched the show so he probably chose this song because a lot of people knows it and they can enjoy his performance and sing it with him.

Is this a form of protest?
Phil Collin song is romantic. Because of this I can say that it is not a form of protest. A lot of people enjoyed it and had fun while he is doing his performance.

Do you think one person can start the same concert?
I think it is possible that someone will do the same concert. There are still a lot of people in different part of the world who is suffering because they are poor. I am sure that some artists wanted to help them, so if they think that it will be successful to have the same concert their gonna do the same to help those people who is suffering in their everyday life.

Include a video link of your favourite song.

How significant is music and musician today in affecting change in the world?
Music and artists is very different from the artist before. However, there are artists who really like helping poor people around the world. Some of them is writing some songs using those issue around the world as an inspiration. This is an example of how does music and musician affecting change in our world. One  of the example is Ariana Grande's concert on 2017. In this concert there is suicide bombing happened. This is showing that they are some people who is using this times to create this kind of problems, because they think it will be easier for them since Ariana is famous and there will be a lot of people are going to her concert.

English Assessment

Do you have that moment when you feel proud of yourself for a small thing? And that moment that you remembered your past to another kid?

It was a normal day for me to enjoy my own time, to clear my stress and thoughts. Brown and golden leaves started to fall, the kids ran on them as the crunchy sound ringing my ear. I watched them from afar as a smile suddenly appeared on my lips. Moving my head away from them as I take a deep breath inhaling the fresh air. I continue to take my steps and explore the beauty of the park. Scanning the park, noticing those kids with their mum having a good time. Sadness quickly filled my body as I started to remember my mum. Think back on the time that we used to entertain each other and enjoyed the time together. Deep thoughts filled my mind as I continued my steps but stopped as I realized that I bumped into someone.

Turning my gaze down as I saw a little boy staring at me with his teary eyes makes me feel bothered. Getting down on my one knee to match with his level as I pat his head and ask what is wrong. Waiting for the response but, instead, he sobbed out loud, earning the attention of some people around us. I started to panic, and I didn't know what to do. I look back at him, who is continuing to shed his tears. I tried to think of a solution to stop the little boy as I remember the leftover lollies that I haven't eaten earlier, pulling them out of my pocket and giving them to him. I released a sigh of relief as the boy finally stopped crying. I was about to speak and ask the little boy but I was interrupted by a woman taking long steps going in our direction. Observing her actions as she hugged the little boy, fear and worries are visible through her eyes. The little boy wrapped his short arms around her as I stayed there smiling at them. I was about to turn around to leave, but someone stopped me. I turned around and saw the lady holding the boy's hand as they took steps towards me. She lost her grip on the boy's hand as he ran to me and hugged my legs. A chuckle escapes my mouth as I start caressing his head.

The lady walked towards us as she thanked me for comforting and taking care of the boy. I smiled at her as she suddenly handed me money, widening my eyes as I aggressively shook my head and refused her offer. She continued to convince me as I kept refusing her. She finally gave up and asked me what she would do in return to repay me. I just smiled at her and told her that raising her son to be good, kind, and helpful to others is enough to pay me back. She hugged me as she said her final goodbye and walked away with her son. The boy looked back at me for the last time and waved his tiny hands as I waved both of my hands to him with a wide smile on my face.

I looked at them as they finally out of my sight. I released a long breath, my lips curved into a smile as I continued to walk and enjoyed my time by myself. I can't stop smiling because of the scene that happened earlier. It makes my mood better. Little disappointment in my body as I remember that I didn’t ask for any information or even their name.  Time pass, I can't still forget that moment. I didn't expect that it would become one of the most important things that happened in my life without knowing them. If you're wondering why that small moment is important for me, and why that thing I didn’t take the money for, instead I asked her for a very simple favor. Because my mum once told me before she left me that we should have courage and be kind.

Colour, Texture and Flavour

This term in our home economics class, we have been learning about texture, colour and flavor. We are also learning why this is important in our food. The food that we have been cooking in our practical works are needed to show this 3 different things. This made us think why it is important in our dish.

Colour is one of the important quality that we need to have in our food. As they said, we eat with our eyes so we need to make our food become presentable and look good. If our food has a good colour on it people will like to try them. Also it is better if we are using a natural color in our food because food coloring can affect our body.

Texture is also important in our food because it determines the quality of the food and it's nutritional value.

Colour and texture are important but I think flavour is the most important in our food. Flavour is all about the taste of the food that we made, if our food tastes good it will give a satisfaction in our consumers.

All of the is important in our food, they can help us in many different ways. Always remember that our food needs to have a good texture, color and the flavour

My Favorite Cultural Event

Today is ESOL, we wrote an essay talking about our favorite cultural event. Also we need to include in out essay the things that we are doing to celebrate this particular event in our culture. Our essay needs to have 250-300 words on it. We also need to put our essay in our blog. The event the I picked is the Festival Of Black Nazarene, I decided to choose this because it's one of the most important event for my family.

This is my essay:

As a Filipino we have a lot of different cultural events. We are celebrating them in many different ways, some of them don't really need to do a celebration. The event that is really important for my family is the Festival of Black Nazareno. This is important in our country especially those who are Catholic. This is also one of the famous and popular festivals that is happening in the Philippines every year. Black Nazareno is a life size imagine, kneeling Jesus while carrying the cross. A lot of people, even my family, believed that this statue could heal any sickness after you touched it. The festival for this is happening every January 9 every year, a lot of people will help each other to carry it and do a little parade. Since this festival is really important for a lot of people, a lot of people will try their best to touch the Nazareno for a blessing.

Some people have a piece of cloth to wipe it on the Nazareno figure, this is really important that most of the news and channels are talking and showing about the Festival of Black Nazareno. When I was in the Philippines, me and my family used to go and contribute to those festivals of the Black Nazareno. After we moved here in New Zealand, we can only see it through live and news from the Philippines. It is not really complicated like the other church events so my family doesn't really need to do such a particular thing to celebrate it. But we used to watch a mass that was happening before they started the parade. We are celebrating a lot of different cultural events but I can say that this one is my favorite because it’s about church and I know that this is really important not just in my culture but also in my religion.
